Jane Addams is best known as a peace activist and social reform
representative. She won the Nobel Peace Prize (1931), which she shared with Nicholas Murray Butler. With the help of Ellen Starr, her beloved companion, she founded the Hull House in Chicago (1889). Not only did Jane found the Hull House, a place where immigrant adults and children could find free housing and education, but she also founded the International League for Peace and Freedom, and the Women’s Peace Party. By the end of her career, Addams had created a great impact on America's federal policies, and many lives throughout the country. |
Jane Addams Quote
"I am not one of those who believe - broadly speaking - that women are better than men. We have not wrecked railroads, nor corrupted legislatures, nor done many unholy things that men have done; but then we must remember that we have not had the chance." - Jane Addams
